Frederick Varley
A founding member of the Group of Seven, Fred Varley helped establish a national style of painting the Canadian landscape. After emigrating from England in 1912, he met other future members of the Group of Seven while working as a commercial illustrator in Toronto. Known early in his career as a masterful portraitist, he also distinguished himself as an official First World War artist. In 1926, he set off to teach on the West Coast where he painted many of his expressive landscapes and striking portraits. His unconventional use of exotic colours to convey human emotions remains a singular contribution to Canadian art. Approved 2007
Frederick Varley
