Old Kingston Hall

The Old Kingston Hall comprises a two and one-half storey wood frame building and lot located on a knoll on Main Street in the Village of Rexton.

The heritage value of the Old Kingston Hall resides in previous use as the community hospital. As such, many of residents of Rexton and the surrounding area were born there. The small 15-bed facility served the community as its only hospital for the years 1946-1976.

The land, owned by William Bowser (father of a former premier of British Columbia of the same name) and his wife, was transferred to the trustees of St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church in 1880 who built the building for the purpose of a church manse. In 1945 it was sold and through shares to members of the community the Kingston Hall opened as a hospital. The hospital closed in 1976 and the building was turned over to the Village of Rexton who currently use a portion of the building for the municipal office.

Old Kingston Hall comprend un bâtiment à ossature de bois de deux étages et demi et un terrain qui sont situés sur une colline de la rue Main dans le village de Rexton.

La valeur patrimoniale du Old Kingston Hall vient de son utilisation antérieure en tant qu’hôpital communautaire. Ainsi, un grand nombre de résidents de Rexton et de la région environnante y sont nés. Cette petite installation de 15 lits a servi la communauté comme son seul hôpital de 1946 jusqu’à 1976.

Le terrain qui appartenait à William Bowser (père d’un ancien premier ministre du même nom en Colombie-Britannique) et à son épouse a été cédé aux fiduciaires de l’église presbytérienne de St. Andrew en 1880 qui y ont construit un bâtiment devenu presbytère. En 1945, il a été vendu et, grâce à des actions des membres de la communauté, il a été transformé en hôpital. L’hôpital a fermé en 1976 et le bâtiment a été remis au village de Rexton qui en utilise une partie en bureau municipal.
