234-236 Odell Avenue

This two-and-a-half storey wood frame dwelling is situated on the eastern side of Odell Avenue. The Classical Revival main portion of the dwelling, which was constructed in 1891, faces Wilmot Park.

The construction of this dwelling reflects the early development of the western extremity of Fredericton’s town limit. Before the mid-1890’s, settlement and housing development was largely contained within the traditional boundaries of the town plat. Odell Avenue, originally known as Park Street, opened in 1895 in response to the anticipated building boom in the vicinity of Wilmot Park. This house is significant not only as it was built before the formal establishment of Wilmot Park, but because its construction predated the creation of the street on which it is now situated.

When this Classical Revival dwelling was built in 1891, a barn also occupied this lot. In 1923 the barn, which was located near the rear of the house, was attached to the main house and converted to living space.

Cette maison de deux étages et demi à ossature de bois est située sur le côté est de l’avenue Odell. La partie principale de l’habitation de style renouveau classique, construite en 1891, fait face au parc Wilmot.

La construction de cette habitation témoigne du premier aménagement de l’extrémité ouest de la ville de Fredericton. Avant le milieu des années 1890, l’établissement et l’aménagement d’habitations se concentraient surtout dans les limites traditionnelles de la ville. L’avenue Odell, initialement nommée rue Park, a été ouverte en 1895 pour répondre aux besoins de l’essor immobilier prévu dans le voisinage du parc Wilmot. La maison est importante non seulement parce qu’elle a été construite avant l’ouverture officielle du parc Wilmot, mais également parce que sa construction est antérieure à la création de la rue sur laquelle elle est actuellement située.

Lorsque cette habitation de style renouveau classique a été construite en 1891, on trouvait également une grange sur le terrain. En 1923, la grange, qui était située près de l’arrière de la maison, a été annexée à la résidence principale et transformée en lieu habitable.
