Thomas Poole Building
The Thomas Poole Building is a modestly proportioned two-storey commercial/residential structure on the main business street in the village of Baldur. Constructed in 1910 and later expanded to the rear, the solid brick building sits amid a series of business facilities. The site’s municipal designation applies to the building and its lot.
The Thomas Poole Building is a good example of a well-crafted small-town business block that retains much of its exterior main-street character. Built to house the well-established hardware business of pioneer merchant Thomas E. Poole, in a community that was also well-established, the structure demonstrates both functionality and permanence. The hardware business continued through three owners and 70 years before giving way to other ventures reflecting Baldur’s needs. The building itself, with its fine brick detail at the roofline, continues to be a distinctive part of its rural village streetscape.

L’édifice Thomas Poole est une structure commerciale et résidentielle de deux étages aux proportions modestes, situé sur la principale rue commerçante du village de Baldur. Construit en 1910 et agrandi par la suite à l’arrière, le bâtiment de brique pleine est entouré d’autres établissements commerciaux. La désignation municipale du site s’applique au bâtiment et au terrain qu’il occupe.
L’édifice Thomas Poole est un bon exemple de bâtiment commercial de petite ville bien exécuté qui a conservé l’essentiel de son caractère extérieur sur la rue principale. Construite pour abriter la quincaillerie bien établie de l’un des premiers marchands dénommé Thomas E. Poole, dans une localité également bien établie, la structure exprime à la fois le fonctionnalisme et la permanence. La quincaillerie a duré 70 ans et a connu trois propriétaires avant de faire place à d’autres commerces répondant aux besoins de Baldur. De par son superbe briquetage au niveau de la ligne de toiture, le bâtiment reste un élément original du village.
