The heritage value of the house at 4202, chemin Saint-Jean lies in its representativeness as a vernacular dwelling. So-called vernacular architecture is architecture specific to a region. It is built from available local resources and thus perpetuates traditional building methods. At the time of its construction, around 1875, the house at 4202, chemin Saint-Jean stood in a rural setting. The dwelling is characteristic of vernacular architecture in its modest main block, its gable roof with flared eaves, the roughcast walls, the symmetrically arranged openings on the facade, the simple lines and the plain ornamentation. An annex lower than the main body of the house was added against one of the gable walls. This enlargement reflects a common practice in rural areas. Its more recent construction is evident from its straight-pitched gable roof. The residence thus recalls the persistence of certain traditional models in late 19th-century Québec residential architecture, as well as the alterations commonly made to houses of that period.
