18th Century Mi’kmaw-French Alliance, Rocky Point, PEI (English
This political and military alliance of sovereign peoples, based on shared and respective needs in trade and war, emerged from Mi’kmaq-French relationships dating back to the early 17th century. Beginning in the 1720s, they frequently met here to renew their alliance by exchanging gifts, strengthening religious ties, and engaging in diplomacy. Near this site, their allied forces fought the British in 1745 and 1746. Through this alliance, the Mi’kmaq strengthened their position within their territory and, with the French, slowed British colonial expansion until the capture of Louisbourg from France in 1758.
